Our History

The George Edgecomb Society (GES) was founded in 2017 in memory of the Honorable George Edgecomb, Tampa’s first African American judge, who passed away at the young age of 34 from cancer. His life, legacy, and commitment to justice serve as the foundation for our mission: to eliminate cancer health disparities in communities of color, particularly among African Americans, through groundbreaking research, education, advocacy, and community partnerships.

Our Purpose

GES was established to address the persistent and alarming disparities in cancer incidence, treatment, and survival rates affecting Black communities. From the outset, we envisioned a society that would not only raise awareness but also serve as a catalyst for tangible change by funding research that directly tackles the root causes of inequity and translating findings into real-world solutions.

Our Impact

Since its inception, the George Edgecomb Society has:

  • Funded 16 pilot research projects—spanning areas such as lung cancer, colorectal cancer screening, multiple myeloma, prostate cancer, survivorship, and precision medicine.
  • Raised over $2,000,000 to support disparities-focused research and programming at Moffitt Cancer Center and in surrounding communities.
  • Engaged more than 30 investigators in collaborative efforts aimed at reducing disparities and improving cancer outcomes for underserved populations.

Each year, we invite investigators to submit pilot proposals that are peer-reviewed and selected based on innovation, feasibility, and alignment with the GES mission.

Our Community

Our strength lies in our community. The GES Steering Committee includes a dynamic mix of scientists, clinicians, Moffitt leaders, community leaders, Moffitt board members, philanthropists, and patient advocates. Together, we guide the strategic direction of the Society and ensure that our investments align with the evolving needs of the people we serve.

Join Us

The work of the George Edgecomb Society is far from finished. Cancer continues to disproportionately impact communities of color, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to change that reality.

We invite you to partner with us—whether as a donor, researcher, advocate, or community collaborator. Together, we can continue to honor the legacy of Judge Edgecomb by ensuring that everyone, regardless of race or background, has a fair chance at surviving and thriving beyond cancer.
