CHAPEAUS - is plural for the French word "hat". Here is a list and description of some of the hats Tom wears at Moffitt.
Executive Vice President (EVP)
Reporting directly to the CEO, Dr. List, the responsibilities include participating as a part of the senior leadership team of the institution. Although EVPs have primary areas of responsibility, they also are expected to participate in broader institutional strategies, activities, and oversight. For example, although my primary responsibility is for research, I'm expected to contribute to overall strategic planning and success of each of the Moffitt corporations, including the hospital, the Moffitt Medical Group and the Foundation.
Director of the Moffitt Research Institute (MRI)
With the transfer of the faculty to Moffitt employment in 2008, a need was created for an academic home for the research faculty. The MRI has two academic Divisions: one for Basic Science (headed by Dr. John Cleveland) and one for Population Science (temporarily headed by me). This hat therefore includes issues related to faculty governance, appointments, promotion and tenure, policies, and all financial issues related to the MRI (a $145M annual budget). I chair the weekly Research Executive Committee (REX) comprised of the Associate Center Directors (Cleveland, Sullivan, Djeu, Springer and Mule'); the Research Institute Steering Committee (RISC) and the monthly MRI Faculty Forum.
Member, Cancer Epidemiology Program
Although I have several administrative responsibilities, I maintain an active research portfolio that is aligned with this CCSG Program.
