Educational Events

Cancer is the leading cause of death among Hispanics in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Our free educational events help educate the Hispanic community in Tampa Bay about the importance of cancer prevention, early detection, treatment programs and cancer research in the fight against cancer.


October 13, 2012 - Latinos y el cancer

Moffitt and Ponce physicians and healthcare professionals held interactive sessions to discuss cancer prevention, screening, early detection, and health disparities with the community. Topics discussed included nutrition and exercise, lung cancer, women's cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, skin cancer, hematological malignancies and psychosocial and palliative care.

April 26, 2013 - El Puente (The Bridge)

At "El Puente," Ponce School of Medicine researchers presented studies and main results to community leaders. Group discussions were also held to identify the concerns and expectations community leaders and researchers have about research participation. Participating community leaders enjoyed the opportunity to learn about cancer studies directly from researchers.

May 3, 2013 - Community Engagement Forum

This Community Engagement Forum focused on cancer control and prevention educational needs and strategies. Participants also learned about the National Cancer Institute's role in research and heard a cancer survivor's testimonial regarding the importance of cancer education.

August 8, 2013: ¡Salud! Serie de charlas: Consejos para prevenir el cáncer

Spanish-speaking healthcare providers and cancer experts participated in an interactive panel discussion about cancer prevention and answered questions from the audience. Topics discussed included nutrition and exercise, how to reduce your risk of developing cancer, the importance of early detection, and techniques to alleviate stress.

November 23, 2013: ¡Salud! Serie de charlas: Avances en la prevención y el tratamiento del cáncer de pulmón 

Spanish-speaking physicians and cancer experts participated in an interactive panel discussion about lung cancer prevention and treatment, and the importance of lung cancer research to improve treatment. A lung cancer survivor also discussed her personal experience battling the disease.

March 29, 2014: ¡Salud! Serie de charlas: Cancer Colorrectal

This event was held on Saturday, March 29th at Moffitt Cancer Center's Stabile Research Building and focused on colorectal cancer awareness. Four panelists discussed colorectal cancer and treatment, screening, survivorship and patient/survivor experience. The event was held in collaboration with Moffitt's Department of Gastrointestinal Oncology.

June 6, 2014 - El Puente

The Bridge brings cancer investigators and community leaders together to improve understanding of cancer research and community participation. The event was heldon Friday, June 6th at the Ponce School of Medicine and focused on educating community members and researchers about the principles of Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR). Attendees learned about CBPR principles and a local CBPR project (Dr. Lydia Santiago and Dr. Enid García), and participated in discussion groups to evaluate how community members and researchers were able to communicate and select a cancer issue affecting their community as a starting point for CBPR. Attendees also responded to pre-post assessments measuring CBPR knowledge gained at the event.

July 19, 2014: ¡Salud! Serie de charlas: La vida después del diagnóstico de cáncer

This event was held on Saturday, July 19th at Moffitt Cancer Center's Stabile Research Building and focused on survivorship. Four panelists discussed survivorship, the importance of support groups, nutrition and exercise. Also, a relaxation technique was demonstrated.

February 21, 2015 ¡Salud! Serie de charlas: Prevención y tratamiento del cáncer cervical

This event was held on Saturday, February 21 at the Hispanic Outreach Center in Pinellas county and focused on cervical cancer education. Dr. Ingrid Ramirez-Diaz and our Community Health Educator discussed the importance of screening for cervical cancer and HPV vaccines. Also, attendees received free mammogram vouchers.

February 28, 2015 Hablemos de cancer

The event was held on Saturday, February 28th at the Ponce Salvation Army. The event focused on cancer education and had the following session topics: women's cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer and smoking cessation strategies, skin cancer, psychological support for families and caregivers, nutrition, and physical activity. Public figures participated at the event such as TV presenter Dagmar Rivera (cancer survivor) and Douglas Candelario (agronomist/motivator). Five-hundred and fifty-three community members attended the event

June 6, 2015: ¡Salud! Serie de charlas: Manteniendo una vida saludable para prevenir el cáncer

Spanish-speaking healthcare providers and cancer experts participated in an interactive panel discussion about cancer prevention and answered questions from the audience. Topics discussed included nutrition and exercise, how to reduce your risk of developing cancer, the importance of early detection, colorectal cancer information, and how to create your own organic market garden. Also, an interactive exercise activity was done.

September 11, 2015 El Puente 

The Bridge is an event that brings cancer investigators and community leaders together with the purpose of improve the understanding of cancer research and community participation. The purpose of this year’s Bridge event held on Friday, September 11th at the Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU)) was to present to the community members the outcomes of last year’s Bridge event. This year’s Bridge event featured panelists of the Biobanking (Drs. Flores and Casbas) and the Outreach Pilot Project (Johanna Corchado) who discussed barriers and facilitating factors during the recruitment process.

The event was held on Tuesday, December 22nd at Catholic Charities’ Blessed Sacrament Manor. Spanish-speaking healthcare providers and cancer experts participated in an interactive panel discussion about lung cancer prevention and treatment and answered questions from the audience.Three panelists discussed lung cancer and treatment (Dr. Alberto Chiappori), lung cancer research (Dr. Teresita Muñoz-Antonia), and smoking cessation (Diana Díaz).

May 6, 2016: Community Engagement Forum

The event was held on Friday, May 6th at Ponce Health Sciences University and focused on cancer prevention.  Four panelists discussed the Ponce School of Medicine – Moffitt Cancer Center Partnership (Julio Jiménez, MD), what is cancer and how to prevent it (Maricarmen Ramírez Solá, MPHE), cancer myths and early detection screening (Héctor Vélez, MD), and cancer patient rights (Iván Ayala).

October 8, 2016:  Latinos y el cáncer

Moffitt and community physicians and healthcare professionals held interactive sessions to discuss cancer prevention, screening, early detection, treatment and research. Topics discussed included nutrition and exercise, cancer genetics, lung cancer, women’s cancer, colon cancer, skin cancer, prostate cancer and psychosocial and palliative care. Attendees were also offered several screenings: skin cancer,  glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure. Attendees also had the opportunity to register for a community participant registry, and the National Bone Marrow Donor Program. Furthermore, approximately 12 participants spoke with a genetic counselor about their genetic risk for cancer.

March 4, 2017:  Hablemos de Cancer

Approximately 641 community members from the southern region of Puerto Rico participated in Hablemos de cáncer on March 4, 2017. The PHSU-MCC Partnership held the conference at the Pontifical Catholic University of Ponce, Puerto Rico and facilitated various workshops, such as women’s cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, skin cancer, nutrition, mental health, and physical activity. After the workshops, the conference held a plenary session where different health professionals and cancer experts, including several from Moffitt Cancer Center, answered questions from the audience. Furthermore, Keylla Hernandez, reporter for WAPA TV,  shared her experience and testimony as  patient at Moffitt Cancer Center.
